Regulatory news leads the tape. The SEC has proposed “Regulation Crypto Assets,” a first-of-its-kind framework creating $5M and $75M offering paths for token projects, alongside a token safe-harbor proposal. Chair Paul Atkins called it the “most historic step yet” in crypto regulation, adding America “must and will lead.” Separately, the White House is planning a crypto summit ahead of a September vote on the CLARITY Act, while Cuomo urged Congress to pass it, saying the US is lagging. The question is whether the framework brings issuers back to the US, as the SEC intends.
Markets elsewhere are cautious. European stock markets are set for a weak start, and South Korea’s Kospi fell 5.7%, with tensions over oil and AI weighing on sentiment. Oil climbed further while the bond selloff slowed. Bank of America’s Raedler warned of an AI pullback, and exchange stablecoin reserves are reported down 20%, suggesting thin liquidity. Bank Indonesia held rates at 5.75%, with emerging markets rattled by Middle East tensions, and the ECB faces an energy shock it cannot fix.
On the data calendar, Canada’s CPI release is the high-impact event: headline and core measures will be watched for signals on the Bank of Canada path. China releases a broad batch of activity data — industrial production, retail sales, fixed asset investment, unemployment and new home prices — plus an NBS press conference. Japan’s preliminary GDP, revised industrial production and tertiary activity are also due, along with the US Empire State manufacturing index, the UK Rightmove house prices and New Zealand’s services index. The mix of inflation and growth data, layered on crypto headlines and oil, should keep markets focused.
