SESSION PREP · US
What to watch in the US session
The US session (New York open · the afternoon drive) · updated 2026-08-20 14:17 UTC.
Bitcoin’s charge continues — still north of $71,000 after the White House crypto push, SEC proposal, and a $517M ETF inflow day. But the other half of yesterday’s story is reversing: JPMorgan’s buyback warning is now playing out as pressure builds in the bond market and oil jumps, even though some headlines credit falling yields for crypto’s pop. The uninvited guest has arrived.
Today’s window stays light. The Philly Fed index and weekly jobless claims are the main events — factory sentiment and the labor pulse. Canada’s IPPI, NHPI, and RMPI are low-tier, as are the CB Leading Index and natural gas storage.
Watch whether the bond move overtakes crypto as the session’s driver. The technical gauge leans with the tape: EUR/USD bearish, GBP/USD bearish, USD/JPY bullish. Gold is neutral, an uptrend tempered by yield event-risk. Oil is neutral but tilted up after a sharp bounce. Bitcoin and Ethereum are neutral, with supportive headlines nudging bitcoin mildly higher. So the story continues on crypto but reverses on yields — if the data feeds the bond jitters, the mood could shift.
