What to watch in the US session

The US session (New York open · the afternoon drive) · updated 2026-08-26 12:01 UTC.

The overnight story mostly continues: oil is sliding on tentative Hormuz headlines, global stocks are mostly firmer, and bitcoin’s rally is still parked near its three-month high. The main shift? The US data desk is awake today, so the tape has more than headlines to chew on.

The US window features core PCE, preliminary GDP, durables, personal income and spending, plus crude inventories — and FOMC’s Barkin speaks. Core PCE and GDP are the ones to watch; a surprise either way could add some direction to a USD that’s been leaning firmer.

The technical barometer thumbs a similar page: EUR/USD is neutral, capped at 1.16703; USD/JPY bullish-leaning but boxed between 159.03 and 159.19; GBP/USD bullish-leaning yet squeezed tighter between 1.36213 and 1.36328. Gold sits high in its range just under 4626.06 resistance. Oil remains the odd one out — bearish clear, H4 RSI 26.0, with a divergence warning; 79.95 is the immediate ceiling. Crypto is split: bitcoin’s higher timeframe trend is up but momentum is soft; ethereum stays bearish-leaning. Keep the coffee close — a data surprise could make the squeeze levels pop.
