Retirees: This investment gives you a guaranteed 5% safe withdrawal rate
For retirees, the "safe withdrawal rate" has long anchored retirement planning—the idea that a portfolio can sustain a certain annual withdrawal without running dry. For decades, 4% was the rule of thumb, a figure grounded in historical inflation-adjusted returns on conservative assets. Those assumptions hinge on the real yield available from low-risk government bonds.
This is why the recent move in Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, or TIPS, is significant. With real yields at or near 20-year highs, the inflation-adjusted return locked in on these bonds now approaches a level that can mathematically support a roughly 5% annual withdrawal—without depleting principal—provided the bonds are held to maturity. Because TIPS adjust their principal with inflation, this real yield is effectively guaranteed at purchase, offering a level of certainty rare in today's markets.
What to watch: whether yields hold near these levels, the trajectory of inflation, and how financial advisors structure retirement income plans around this window. Importantly, a 5% rate tied to a bond ladder is not the same as assuming 5% from a diversified equity portfolio. The guarantee only applies to the bond portion, held to term, and comes with the opportunity cost of locking funds away.
