Poland’s parliament fails to override President's crypto veto: Here’s why - thenews.com.pk

Poland’s parliament has failed to secure the three-fifths majority needed to override President Andrzej Duda’s veto of a comprehensive cryptocurrency regulation bill. The legislation, which aimed to align Polish law with the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework, was rejected by the president in late 2024. Lawmakers’ attempt to overturn that decision fell short, leaving the country without a dedicated national framework for digital asset service providers.
This outcome does not suspend MiCA’s direct application across the EU, but it does create a legal gray area in Poland. Under the current rules, crypto firms operating there must rely on general financial and tax laws, which were not designed for blockchain-based assets. The veto also delays the establishment of a local licensing regime, meaning Polish businesses may seek authorization in other member states while domestic oversight remains fragmented.
For market participants, the key variable is timing. The bill’s failure does not alter the underlying EU-wide compliance deadline, but it adds regulatory uncertainty for Poland-based exchanges and custodians. Investors should monitor whether the government introduces a revised proposal or waits for the European Commission’s guidance on transitional periods. Until then, jurisdictional arbitrage within the bloc is likely to remain a central theme.
