Oil over $100 has JPMorgan strategists warning stock-market investors against missing out on a sudden turnaround
Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate front-month contracts moved above $100 on Monday after Saudi Arabia shut its East-West pipeline, citing damage from drone attacks. The closure matters because that route has served as a bypass around the Strait of Hormuz, so its loss removes a key alternative for moving barrels to market. Supply concerns, not demand strength, are driving the move.
JPMorgan strategists used the moment to caution stock-market investors against assuming the spike will fade quickly. Their concern is a sudden turnaround: if crude retreats sharply once flows resume, equities could rally hard, and investors positioned for sustained inflation and higher energy costs may be left behind. Conversely, a prolonged outage would keep input costs elevated and pressure margins for transport, chemicals and consumer-facing companies.
What to watch is straightforward: confirmation of when the pipeline returns, whether other exporters offset the shortfall, and how bond yields respond to the inflation signal. For now, the oil move looks event-driven, but the market's reaction will depend on how long the disruption lasts.
