Why investors need to learn the difference between uncertainty and risk in today’s market

The distinction between uncertainty and risk is more than semantics. Risk describes situations where outcomes can be estimated with reasonable probability; uncertainty describes situations where they cannot. In markets shaped by shifting policy, geopolitical tension and rapid technological change, investors often face the latter while treating it as the former.

Hedge-fund founder Alec Litowitz argues that investors should make their identity about being adaptive, rather than trying to be right. The point is not to abandon analysis but to hold conclusions loosely enough to adjust when new information arrives. Portfolios built around a single forecast can struggle when the environment shifts.

What to watch: how much of a portfolio depends on one view of the future, and whether there is a process for revising that view as conditions change. Adaptability is not a guarantee of returns, but it can help investors respond to uncertainty rather than be surprised by it.
