Coinbase Stablecore partnership brings crypto custody to 3,000 US banks - The Cryptonomist

Coinbase has partnered with Stablecore to extend cryptocurrency custody services to roughly 3,000 US banks, according to The Cryptonomist. The arrangement is notable less for any single product than for the distribution channel it opens: community and regional banks that have largely stayed on the sidelines of digital assets may now offer custody through an established infrastructure provider rather than building the capability in-house.
For the market, the development speaks to a gradual shift in how crypto exposure reaches end clients. Custody is a foundational service — it holds and safeguards assets rather than encouraging trading — and bank involvement could bring digital assets into more conventional wealth-management and treasury conversations. It also signals that regulated intermediaries, not just crypto-native firms, are being positioned as gatekeepers for client holdings.
What to watch is implementation rather than the announcement itself. The key questions are which banks actually go live, what assets and client types are supported, and how custody interacts with existing bank compliance and risk frameworks. Adoption timelines and any regulatory response will matter more than the headline figure of 3,000 banks.
