SoFi Just Went Live With Stablecoin Settlement on Mastercard. That’s the First Bank-Issued Stablecoin on a Major Card Network. - Yahoo Finance

SoFi has begun settling transactions in stablecoins over Mastercard’s network, a step the company describes as the first stablecoin issued by a bank to go live on a major card network. The arrangement points to something more structural than a single product launch: it places a bank-issued digital token inside existing card rails rather than alongside them.
For markets, the significance is the convergence it signals. Stablecoins have largely circulated in crypto-native venues; card networks have largely run on traditional settlement. Linking the two could shorten settlement times and reduce reliance on correspondent banking for certain flows — if the model scales beyond a single issuer and network.
What to watch is breadth, not novelty. Whether other banks issue comparable tokens, whether merchants and acquirers accept them at scale, and how regulators treat bank-issued stablecoins in settlement will determine if this remains a notable first or becomes a template.
