Citibank’s Coinbase stablecoin payments let institutional clients skip crypto setup - The Cryptonomist

Citibank has reportedly introduced a stablecoin payment capability with Coinbase that allows its institutional clients to move funds without setting up their own crypto infrastructure. According to The Cryptonomist, the arrangement is designed so that clients can access stablecoin-based settlement through Citibank rather than building direct on-chain capabilities themselves.
The development matters because the main barrier to stablecoin adoption for large institutions has often been operational rather than conceptual. Corporates and funds may see value in faster, round-the-clock settlement, but standing up custody, wallet management, and compliance workflows is costly and slow. By acting as an intermediary, a bank can lower that barrier and fold stablecoin rails into existing banking relationships.
What to watch is how broadly such services are offered, which stablecoins are supported, and how regulators treat bank-intermediated stablecoin payments. If the model gains traction, it could push stablecoins further into mainstream payment and treasury use — while keeping banks, rather than crypto-native firms, as the primary client-facing layer.
