Stripe, Visa-Backed Consortium Launches Dollar Stablecoin - bloomberg.com

A consortium that includes payments companies Stripe and Visa has launched a dollar-denominated stablecoin, according to Bloomberg. The token is designed to maintain a one-to-one value with the U.S. dollar, the model already used by established stablecoins such as USDC and USDT.

The involvement of major payment processors is the notable part. Stablecoins have largely been issued by crypto-native firms; backing from companies that already sit inside mainstream card and merchant networks suggests the tokens could be integrated into conventional payment rails rather than confined to crypto exchanges. That could matter for cross-border settlement and merchant payouts, areas where stablecoins are already used to move funds faster than correspondent banking.

What to watch: whether the consortium discloses the composition of its reserve assets and the frequency of attestations, since redemption confidence depends on that transparency. Also worth tracking is regulatory treatment, particularly in the U.S., where stablecoin legislation remains in progress. Adoption by merchants and card networks, not the launch itself, will determine whether the token gains practical use.
