Stripe, Visa-Backed Consortium Launches Dollar Stablecoin - Bloomberg.com

A consortium including Stripe and Visa has launched a dollar-backed stablecoin, according to Bloomberg. The move places two of the largest names in payments directly into the stablecoin market, which has until now been dominated by issuers such as Tether and Circle.

The significance lies in distribution. Stripe and Visa already sit inside the plumbing that merchants, banks, and card networks use every day. A stablecoin tied to that infrastructure could make tokenized dollars a settlement option rather than a niche trading tool, potentially easing cross-border payments and reducing reliance on traditional correspondent banking.

For markets, the key questions are which networks the token launches on, how reserves are held and attested, and whether merchants and card issuers adopt it. Regulatory treatment of stablecoin issuers, particularly in the U.S. and Europe, will also shape how quickly this scales. The announcement signals that mainstream payment firms now see dollar tokens as core infrastructure, not a side experiment.
