Switzerland's finance ministry and central bank sign new profit distribution deal - TradingView
Switzerland's finance ministry and the Swiss National Bank have signed a new agreement governing how the central bank's profits are distributed. The arrangement sets the framework for transferring SNB earnings to the federal government and the cantons, and it updates the terms under which those payments are made.
The mechanism matters because the SNB's balance sheet is unusually large relative to the size of the Swiss economy, largely reflecting years of foreign currency purchases aimed at restraining the franc. That means annual results can swing sharply with currency moves and valuation changes on the bank's foreign reserves. The distribution rules act as a buffer, smoothing payments to public budgets while preserving capital so the SNB can keep pursuing its monetary policy mandate even in loss-making years.
For markets, the deal itself is not a monetary policy decision and does not change interest rates or the SNB's reaction function. What to watch is how the revised terms affect the timing and size of future payouts to the confederation and cantons, and whether the SNB's distribution reserve remains adequate if currency-driven losses recur.
