A popular tech fund is now overbought. That’s no reason to sell, history shows.
Technology stocks have surged to record highs, pushing a widely followed tech fund into territory that technical analysts describe as overbought. That label reflects momentum indicators suggesting prices have risen quickly, not a judgment that valuations are unsound. The distinction matters, because overbought conditions describe the speed of a move rather than its merit.
History offers a useful perspective. Strong momentum can persist for extended periods, and overbought readings alone have not reliably signaled market tops. Investors who exited solely on that signal have sometimes missed further gains. Technical measures are one input among many, alongside earnings growth, valuations and broader economic conditions.
What to watch: whether earnings justify the rally, how the fund behaves around prior resistance levels, and whether breadth confirms the advance or narrows to a handful of names. Momentum can fade as quickly as it builds, so position sizing and time horizon remain the practical considerations — not a single technical reading.
