ESMA Expects MiCA-Authorised Crypto Firms to Stop Non-Compliant Stablecoin Services - LeapRate

The European Securities and Markets Authority has signalled that crypto firms authorised under the Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation should wind down services tied to stablecoins that do not meet MiCA's requirements. The expectation applies to issuers and service providers operating within the EU framework, and it marks a shift from transition-period tolerance toward active enforcement of the stablecoin rules.
For markets, the practical effect is a narrowing of the stablecoin universe available to EU users. Tokens that have not secured authorisation, or that fail reserve, governance or disclosure standards, may become inaccessible through compliant venues. That can fragment liquidity between EU and non-EU trading pairs and complicate settlement for firms that relied on non-compliant tokens.
What to watch: which issuers obtain authorisation, how exchanges sequence any delistings, and whether liquidity migrates toward compliant alternatives or offshore venues. The timeline and scope of enforcement will matter as much as the direction, since abrupt changes can affect pricing and operational continuity for market participants.
