ESMA gives EU crypto platforms 3 months to drop non-MiCA stablecoins such as USDT - CoinDesk

The European Securities and Markets Authority has set a three-month window for EU crypto platforms to delist stablecoins that do not comply with the Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation, according to CoinDesk. The guidance affects tokens such as USDT, the largest stablecoin by market value, which has not secured MiCA authorization.
MiCA, which took full effect for most cryptoasset service providers in late 2024, requires stablecoin issuers to hold reserves under defined rules and obtain authorization from a national regulator. Tokens without that status cannot be offered to EU users. The three-month period gives exchanges time to adjust listings and inform customers rather than an immediate cutoff.
Market relevance centers on liquidity and market structure. USDT is widely used as a trading pair and settlement asset, so its removal from EU venues could shift activity toward compliant alternatives, including euro-denominated or MiCA-authorized stablecoins. Watch how major exchanges sequence delistings, whether other large tokens face similar treatment, and whether the change fragments stablecoin liquidity between EU and non-EU venues.
