Higher yields are taking their toll on all areas of the stock market, except the one that matters
Since Sept. 1, only one of the S&P 500's 11 sectors has posted gains: technology. The other ten have declined as Treasury yields climbed to multi-decade highs. This matters because rising yields raise the return available from government bonds, a low-risk alternative to equities. When that "risk-free" yield becomes more attractive, investors tend to demand more compensation for holding stocks — particularly those whose valuations rely on profits expected far in the future.
Technology's resilience may seem counterintuitive, since growth-oriented shares are often viewed as most sensitive to higher discount rates. The sector's gain likely reflects enthusiasm around artificial intelligence and expectations for durable earnings growth, which have helped offset the pressure from rising yields.
For observers, the key question is whether this narrow leadership persists. A market advance concentrated in a single sector can signal caution beneath the surface. Watch whether yields stabilize or continue climbing, and whether other sectors begin participating — or whether technology alone continues to carry the index.
